At OHPERA, we recently reached a significant milestone with the successful completion of the project’s preliminary sustainability validation. Led by LOMARTOV, this accomplishment marks a crucial moment in the project’s progress, aligning with the objectives outlined in Work Package 5 (WP5) Sustainability guidance and validation.
Within our developments, task 5.1 focuses on ensuring the environmental responsibility of OHPERA providing eco-design recommendations to guide the implementation of our technology and minimise our environmental impact. In this framework, the preliminary analysis detailed in Deliverable 5.1 OHPERA eco-design recommendations, employed two key methodologies that facilitated the assessment of materials selected for photoabsorbers (developed in WP1) and electrocatalysts (developed in WP2).
Our streamlined Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology enabled the prioritisation of materials with lower environmental impact (lower area in the spider chart), promoting sustainability throughout the project lifecycle.

Additionally, our Scoring System provided valuable insights into Critical Raw Material (CRM) content, safety hazards, and material costs, aiding in the selection of optimal candidates.

Through this comparison of materials, the project team identified promising options that strike a balance between performance and sustainability, aligning with the European Commission’s CRM act. As the project moves forward, the identified materials will undergo further investigation in subsequent project stages (Deliverable 5.2 Sustainability validation of OHPERA technology) to ensure that sustainability remains a core focus as OHPERA advances toward its goals.
The completion of Milestone 8 proves our commitment to integrating sustainability principles into our innovative approach. With preliminary sustainability validation in place, the project is well-positioned to advance toward transforming green hydrogen production.
