On November 19, 2024, OHPERA hosted the 6th EIC Green Hydrogen Portfolio Young Scientists Meeting. The workshop, designed for junior researchers across portfolio projects, offered an engaging platform to exchange knowledge and tackle shared challenges in advancing green hydrogen technologies through biowaste valorisation.
Organised by the OHPERA project, the event brought together 20 researchers, including communication managers and the new EIC Programme Manager, Carina Faber.
Two groundbreaking topics took center stage during the workshop:
Co-electrolysis of Biomass
– Presented by Robin Kunkel (Fraunhofer ICT) and Charilaos Dragoidis (ETSIDI, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid), from e-lobio, this session explored innovative pathways for producing hydrogen and value-added compounds from biomass.
– Key insights included the challenges of material stability, membrane-less systems, and the design of Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) catalysts for optimal efficiency.
Biomethane Pyrolysis
– Payam Danesh (Università Politecnica di Torino), from H2STEEL, presented a transformative approach for hydrogen production from industrial and municipal sludge using methane pyrolysis.
– The session highlighted environmental concerns, such as heavy metals and organic compound hazards, and showcased H2STEEL’s innovative integration of slow pyrolysis and chemical leaching for sustainable biochar usage.
The meeting concluded with lively discussions and action points for fostering continued collaboration:
– Propose new topics for future workshops and focus groups.
– Explore innovative formats for knowledge exchange among junior scientists.
– Prepare for the next Annual Portfolio Meeting in March 2025.
The Young Scientists Meeting once again demonstrated the power of collaboration in pushing the boundaries of green hydrogen research. Together, these young minds are paving the way for a sustainable future.
Stay tuned for more updates!
